A little over a 10 years ago, Disney’s live-action division was considered to be in trouble due to its inability to launch a new popular IP like they had with Pirates of the Caribbean at the beginning of the 2000s. So then-Disney CEO Bob Iger pursued the purchases of Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm, in much the same vein that Disney solidified its animation dominance at the beginning of the millennium by buying Pixar Animation Studios (another Iger decision)....

Janeway and Chakotay. Captain and Commander. Starfleet and ex-Maquis. One of the biggest “could have been” romances in Star Trek history. The early seasons of Star Trek Voyager certainly toyed with the idea, the two getting stranded on an alien world and having to live together for three months in the episode ‘Resolutions.’ However the romance never came to fruition and Chakotay was oddly paired with Seven of Nine just before the end of Voyager’s run....

Only one of these projects is an actual Batman solo film, though. That’s The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson. It’s a new take on the Bat mythos that looks grittier, darker, and more violent than any that has come before, if you can believe that. Last year’s DC FanDome trailer showed Battinson beating a thug to a pulp while exclaiming, “I’m vengeance,” a moment eclipsed on social media only by the shot of Bruce wearing guy-liner at the end of the video....

The series will follow the character created by Geoff Johns and artist Lee Moder in 1999. Speaking to the crowd at the DC Universe panel at New York Comic Con in 2018, Johns compared the expected tone of the show to movies like Back to the Future and The Karate Kid. He also revealed that legendary Starman writer James Robinson is part of the writers room for the show, and that they’re building a 15-foot-tall STRIPE robot for Courtney to go on adventures with!...

Nevertheless, the movie has amassed a cult following, and did indeed add subtle innovations to the genre. Is the ‘80s horror offering the low-point of slashploitation or were the reviewers merely suffering overkill fatigue? Quentin Tarantino claims this is his favorite slasher flick, which could be used as an argument for either side. My Bloody Valentine is celebrating 40 years right now, which is apt for the movie’s plot. According to the inner logic of the film, its small Canadian mining community, Valentine Bluffs, is due for another homicidal rampage in 2021....

Five episodes in, we finally have a pretty solid idea of where most of The Rings of Power‘s plotlines are going. Galadriel, Halbrand, and the people of Numenor are sailing to Middle-earth to stop the rise of Sauron in the Southlands. Meanwhile, Arondir and Bronwyn will need to find a way to defend the watchtower of Ostirith from Adar’s impending Orc attack. Evil stirs beyond the world of man, too....

A key name associated with stunts in Doctor Who is Derek Ware, who arranged fight scenes in the very first story and later founded the HAVOC stunt team who were regularly involved in the early-Seventies. Doctor Who isn’t a show heavily associated with stunts anymore, but they’re still a key part of the show. Jodie Whittaker still hurled herself into boxes and injured herself during the making of ‘Flux’. We’re in an era of painting out wires, but this still provides opportunities to give the lead actor an adrenalin rush....

You know how it goes. But 2002’s Dog Soldiers dispenses with most of that, allowing the audience’s general pop culture knowledge of the genre to do the heavy lifting in service of something wilder, louder, and even stranger than what we’re usually accustomed to when werewolves are around....

Essentially going back to the grandfather of all “there’s someone in the house” stories, Don’t Breathe takes the concept of Audrey Hepburn being a blind woman locked in with several thieves in Wait Until Dark (1967) and flips it to be about several relatively sympathetic thieves locked in the house with a blind man—one who lost his sight while serving in the U.S. Special Forces. And once he seals the only window that didn’t have bars on it, there’s no way out and there’s no stopping the movie’s giddiness for high adrenaline sequences of almost complete silence....

It’s difficult to overstate the significance of Final Fantasy 7. The game showed audiences the power of 3D graphics and pre-rendered cutscenes, all while providing a story fueled by memorable characters and unforgettable moments. Final Fantasy 6’s Kefka Palazzo might be the best Final Fantasy villain ever because he actually succeeded in his plan to destroy the world and become a god (that is not up for debate), but Final Fantasy 7 features some of the best protagonists in this series’ history....

Films and shows cast actors outside their own age all the time, and it’s not unusual for actors to be aged up or aged down when a show or film takes place over a long time period, but in Firefly Lane this really jars. Tully and Kate are best friends since the age of 14 back in 1974 – Firefly Lane follows the journey of the two, from young teens coping with family and school, to ambitious 20-somethings in the 1980s, to their lives at 43, with Kate going through a divorce and Tully juggling a successful TV career....

In many ways, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an oddity compared to FromSoftware’s post-Demon’s Souls offerings. It’s a stealth-action title that ditches numerous Soulsborne genre standards such as collectible weapons, multiplayer, starting classes, and even stats. Sekiro even replaced traditional Soulsborne Stamina gauges with a Posture meter that encouraged players to time attacks and guards properly, which granted the title’s action an almost “rhythm game-like” flow. While Sekiro kept other, vital Soulsborne tropes alive (such as that genre’s often punishing difficulty level and narrative themes), you really have to venture outside of the FromSoftware library to find games you can easily compare it to (like the Tenchu franchise)....

Though Reynolds made his first MCU connection (kinda) by suiting up as Deadpool and joining Taika Waititi’s amiable Kronan rock warrior Korg for a Free Guy trailer YouTube reaction video last month, there hasn’t been any substantial news on Deadpool’s forthcoming MCU presence for a while. In the midst of doing the press rounds for Free Guy, Reynolds and director Shawn Levy have inevitably been fielding questions from journalists about the Deadpool threequel because they seem to have a really good working relationship, and Levy is also known to be a huge Deadpool fan....

The overwhelmingly positive feedback for Glass Onion singled out the heavy-hitting ensemble, but particularly heaped praise upon Janelle Monáe as Cassandra “Andi” Brand, a mysterious character whose presence is crucial to the film’s plot. No spoilers here, but Monáe delivers a finely tuned, layered performance that suggests the musician-turned-actress is continuing to level-up in front of the camera.
