Some reviews of Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz’s recut of the show’s fourth, Netflix-produced, season have already popped up (you all did not watch it that fast and I am calling your bluff). They all tell roughly the same tale: the fourth season was a disappointment and, while this recut fixes some problems, it’s still hardly a fun time. First off, I want to bitterly reject what I keep seeing, which is critics and fans casually pretending like they always thought Season 4 was not good because I was there, man, and it was a lot more like myself and a handful of other outliers arguing that this thing was a lemon from top to bottom only to be shouted down by everyone else telling us “it gets better” or “watch the whole thing and it’ll magically become funny at the end....

Attack on Titan Season 2 Episode 4 Today’s Attack on Titan episode is another reminder to me of how different Japanese anime is compared to Western television in that 1) a whole episode went by without a single member core main characters—Eren, Mikasa, Armin—making an appearance, and 2) all twenty-some minutes of it took place in one location, following one continuous over-arching storyline. Shifting the narrative away from your main characters to peripheral ones completely isn’t a bad thing....

That first episode is scary, not just when the Titans first appear, but with the manner in which they terrorize Shiganshina District and devour so much of their population. It’s a destabilizing and overwhelming experience and the beginning of “The War Hammer Titan” doesn’t only remember the anime’s horror roots, but it delivers carnage that’s even more frightening than what’s seen in Attack on Titan’s first episode....

Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 7 “These are the demons of Paradis Island…” Who are the good guys in this war again? Attack on Titan has been asking this question all season, but it’s beautifully articulated now that a full-fledged war is in swing between Marley’s best and the “Eldian Devils.” The previous episode begins this conflict, but every single character that the anime has carefully built over these four seasons comes into combat with each other in “Assault” and it’s just fantastic....

For our money, it’s the best action scene in a film stuffed to the gills with kaleidoscopic showstoppers. At the top of the third act, the luxuriantly paced Avatar: The Way of Water finally pivots away from its world-building wonders and back toward the plot. In the broadest possible strokes (which nonetheless remain depressingly plausible), it’s revealed that human capitalists have made a lucrative discovery: Pandora’s tulkuns (large whale-like creatures) contain a substance in their brains that is beneficial to the most wealthy of earthlings....

In Netflix’s Barbarians, Arminius of the Cheroski and Marbod (or Maroboduus if you’re feeling adventurous) of the Macromanni are portrayed as frenemies bordering on enemies whose mutual respect and ill-treatment at the hands of the Romans force them into a working alliance. In reality, the two men had a more distant and hostile relationship. In their later years, long after the Romans had abandoned their expansionist ambitions in Germania, the two men fought each other with weary abandon, their dynastic dreams propelling their thirst for blood....
